How to write an OerSocial profile people can actually find

A profile on OerSocial is a public page. It is not a private resume. Anyone who has the URL can see your display name, username, bio, and public posts. Write it as if a stranger has to decide, in two seconds, whether they found the right person.

Display name versus username

The display name is the large name on the profile. The username is the @handle in the URL. People share the username. Keep it stable. Changing it often breaks old links.

Use a display name you would say in a room. Jokes that depend on a private meme make you unsearchable. Emoji-only names are hard to mention in a reply.

Bio

Two or three sentences is enough. Say what you make and what a visitor should expect in the feed. "Photographs of night trains in Oakland" is useful. "Entrepreneur | visionary | DM for collabs" is not. You can add a website if you have one. Do not paste twenty hashtags into the bio. Hashtags belong on posts that they describe.

Avatar and cover

A consistent avatar is how people confirm they did not open a parody account. A cover image is optional. Do not use someone else's portrait, a stolen album cover, or a brand mark you do not own. That is impersonation even if the bio says "fan."

Verified and affiliation marks

Some accounts show a verified badge or a business affiliation. Those marks are not for sale in the composer. If you see an account pretending to be a company, report it.

What belongs on a profile, and what belongs in a post

A profile should stay mostly stable. Announcements belong in posts. If you pin nothing, your latest public post is what people see first. That is fine. Do not delete and rewrite the same post every hour to stay on top of your own profile. That looks like spam to everyone who follows you.

Finding other people

Use Explore search. Type a name or a username. If you cannot find someone, they may have a different handle than the name they use in conversation. Ask them. Do not create a lookalike account "so they notice you."

A profile that a human can recognize is more useful than a profile stuffed for a search engine. OerSocial is a social product. Write for the person who clicked your name.
